HOW WE WERE CONCEPTUALISED

The rehabilitation centre had its beginnings in the year 1990 under the benefaction of Bharat Educational Society, a registered body. The centre is recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu vide

This centre is the special section of the school for normal children. It functions as a special school or in other words a day care centre. The institute presently has about 100 children comprising of Hearing Impaired and Mentally retarded children.

The institution is the brain child of our Correspondent Mrs. Jaya Chinnaswamy M.A., B.Ed., who is commitment personified and that of our President Thiru.R.S.Chinnaswamy B.A, B.L., who has been the strength behind her.

THESE ARE OUR BASIC FACILITIES

The centre utilizes infrastructure of the parent institution. Spacious and well lit classrooms with comfortable furniture are provided. The center has a well equipped physiotherapy section and also a speech therapy section in addition to the vocational unit. The school has a vast playground. Hygienic toilets for the children proportionate to the strength is available.

The school uses teaching materials and also play equipment to render effective teaching possible to the children. The school has ample support from its parent institution in the way of sharing faculty when the need be. The science laboratories are also utilized for the benefit of the center’s children.

WE BELIEVE IN – “GUIDE AND GROW”

The centre commits itself in guiding its children to realize their potential and grow to reach greater heights with the confidence that is built in them with patience and understanding by their teachers and all connected with the centre. The children are supported to imbibe qualities like confidence, independence, self advocacy, expression and understanding, all towards equipping him in being able to handle his life better and thereby reducing his dependence on family or others.

WHAT WILL THE CHILD LEARN

Our teacher student ratio to 1:8. We follow the MDPS (Madras Developmental Programming System) for the basic Activities for Daily Living that is the core curriculum. This is done so, keeping in mind the fact that many such children have the inability to acquire skills by way of incidental learning or learning by observation that happens by default for most of us. Hence, leaving such skills that the child has acquired and performs quite satisfactorily, the rest is taught in school as part of the core curriculum.

THIS IS OUR ACADEMIC CURRICULUM

We have seen that many of the children who come to us are able to tackle academics too if it is offered to them in a quantity proportionate to their ability levels. Hence, to quench the thirst for knowledge for such children we train them on two levels that are optionally chosen by the parent based upon their personal aspirations in relation to their child. The two levels are

1. National Open School syllabus
2. Tamil Nadu State Board syllabus

NATIONAL OPEN SCHOOL SYLLABUS-

This is the curriculum specified by the National Open School that offers various options based on the abilities of Differently Abled Children. As this is recognized by most of the institutions nation wide it would benefit the child, should he desire to study further.

TAMIL NADU STATE BOARD SYLLABUS-

This is the conventional system wherein the children are taught the basic subjects like Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Language.

HOW DO WE MONITOR THE CHILD’S PROGRESS

We conduct evaluation every quarter so as to assess the progress of your child and the effectiveness of the input given to them. Every child is evaluated in each area viz., speech, physiotherapy, academic and skill areas too. We believe that the progress in any child is a result of the joint effort of both the parents and the educational institution. Hence, parents are expected to compulsorily attend such reviews to know the progress of their wards. Such informal meetings help us to take into account suggestions of parents and heed to their requests to the extent possible in order to aid the child in his development.

WHAT DOES THE CHILD GET WHEN HE JOINS US

We believe in holistic education than a micro outlook. Putting our efforts to this end the centre offers both physiotherapy and speech therapy. This is very integral to the overall development of the child because most of the children have physical constraints and mobility problems.

It is also seen that majority of the children have speech deficits too. Hence, to improve their expressive and receptive language professional therapy for speech is rendered along with incidental speech training.

We have seen in our experience that the total development of a child spreading from physical, speech and academic areas is seen and appreciated well by parents. However marginal this development may be, parents appreciate the effort behind these results. This is the strength behind our efforts and the belief in our dreams.

WHAT ELSE WILL THE CHILD LEARN

Yoga and Craft are compulsory for all children and is within the school hours. We have seen that yoga has helped in the increase of attention span of such children.

The children are taught music and dance. The importance of play is irrevocable. Hence, children are given ample opportunities to discover and unravel their potential in sports.

Various vocational opportunities are offered to such abled children with a view to offer ample placement opportunities.
